Wiley was seized by the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary in September 2009 after being found wandering
the streets of Bodmin when a garden gate was accidently left open at his owner's home. The police then issued a charge against Wiley's owner under Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act, stating that the dog was of the Pit Bull Terrier type. Dr Mugford carried out an independent assessment of Wiley and found him to be a lovely, friendly, young dog who sadly had not been coping well in kennels. His coat was scurfy, he had lying sores and he was underweight.
When matters came to court, Wiley's owner decided to plead guilty to the Section 1 charge and following evidence from Dr Mugford the Magistrates ordered that Wiley be returned to his owner on the Index of Exempted Dogs.
